Quick News
Coldplay have officially released the title to their much anticipated new record. For the past couple months, speculation has been brewing as to what the title of their fourth record maybe. According to Rolling Stone, the band is calling it Viva La Vida (Long Live Life) . The Spanish title comes from the band recording in Spain around this time last year and comes from a series of paintings by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Singer Chris Martin tells the magazine “She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said Viva la Vida [...] I just loved the boldness of it.”Martin then began to joke “Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect.” Viva La Vida is due out this summer.

RIP Anthony Minghella
One of the best directors to emerge out of the U.K. suddenly past away this morning. I was shocked to read the news that Anthony Minghella had departed. The 54 year old Academy Award winning director of The English Patient, The Talented Mr Ripley, Cold Mountain had died of a brain hemorrhage according to reports from imdb.com. I remember the first time I saw Talented Mr. Ripley and its slick cast of Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman had a very Mediterranean vibe. Granted the film is set all over Italy, but something just seem to be too perfect and stick out. It was something much to much for a director from England to grasp, it was then that I learned of Minghella's Italian ancestry and passion for the area that film was set. The film was a display to audiences how fantastic Damon was as an actor, but more importantly broke the career of Jude Law. Law and Minghella would go on to work together many times after, including Cold Mountain and Breaking and Entering, a script Minghella wrote for Law. They were a great actor/director combo with much energy and passion for what they did. Minghella will truley be missed. Cinema has lost one of its rising legends behind the camera.

Rising Aritist - Tripwires
When most bands try and befriend you or myself on Myspace you usually right them off. Or at least I do. However, for some reason I went to this band's site and checked them out. Of course it didn't hurt that they messaged me and told me that I would enjoy their music and they enjoyed my article on The Editors in NYC. After a quick listen to Tripwires, I was immediately hooked. The raw talent and unpolished production plus the haunting lyrics had me going. Think a cross between Joy Division meets Cooper Temple Clause. Its art rock tone and sound even caught the ears of the BBC as they described the lads as "Not only musically strong, incredibly catchy." Originally from Reading, Berkshire. The band consisting of Rhys Edwards (vocals, guitar), Joe Stone (synth, guitar), Ben White (bass) and Sam Pilsbury (drums) met at secondary school in 2002 and have been touring England and the U.K. ever since. I hope they make it across the pond soon because I would love to catch them live. As they are on the rise in Britain, they will be releasing their first world wide single at the end of the month, the single, "Kings and Queens," will be an independant release that I think/hope will lead to bigger and better things for this band. Check them out the way I did.... www.myspace.com/tripwires
Movie of the Month - I Vitelloni
What more can I say and keep saying about Federico Fellini. The older I get, the more I appreciate his work, his stories and his craftsmanship. I Vitelloni is no exception, in fact, it is a turning point. The 1953 film about a group of five close friends living in a small Italian sea side town, are trying to get the most out of life and want more from it. The characters are as diverse from one another as oil is to water. There is womanizer Fausto, forced to marry a girl he has impregnated; Alberto, an adult but juvenile at heart; Riccardo, a want to be singer; Leopoldo, a writer looking for fame; and Moraldo, the only member of the group troubled by a moral conscience. Combined these stories make up I Vitelloni (translation: The Guys). It is a semi-autobiographical film for Fellini and his second solo directorial effort. As these character's in the film struggle for meaning in their lives, the film's strengths (or Fellini's-depending on how you look at it), is that it was willing to take leaps and forwards and was Fellini's first push at censorship (it would later come full circle with La Dolce Vita). In I Vitelloni, Fellini shows womanizing, homosexual references, adulatory. These were things that one could not do back in motion pictures prior to the 1960's, even then it was a gamble. However, the gamble paid off, Fellini garnered an Oscar Nomination for Best Original Screenplay for this film and also began to receive international acclaim. Fellini once remarked, “Our duty as storytellers is to bring people to the station. There each person will choose his or her own train… But we must at least take them to the station… to a point of departure.” In fact he does, displaying one of the greatest endings to a film ever ***ATTENTION SPOILER ALERT****, Fellini takes Moraldo and as he gets on a train going anywhere that is not the sleepy town, it shows a tracking shot of what is going on with the rest of the guys. While they are snuggled in their beds, Moraldo seeks his escape. There are not enough words in any language to describe how amazing this film is, it must be seen.

Underated Classic-Chemical Brothers "Surrender"
Consisting of probably one of my favorite album covers of all time, The Chemical Brothers 1999 release Surrender, had myself and the end of the millennium do just that. It was the third release for the electronic duo and after their breakthrough success with 1996's Dig Your Own Hole, The Chemical Brothers had to stay on top and keep that genre afloat. It is not easy to get people to listen to electronica techno, whatever you would like to call it, yet Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons aka the Chemical Brothers know how to keep a person's attention. Surrender, a record of sonic proportions featured guest appearances by Noel Gallagher, Missy Elliot and Timbaland, and New Order's Bernard Sumner and Primal Screams Bobby Gillespie. Helping bridge the gap between the underground metropolitan scene and Europe's highly charged and popular rave/discotheque scene, The Chemical Brother's knew how to please everyone. They also knew how to utilize the MTV audience before they totally fell out of attention with music all together. They linked up with avaunt gard filmmaker Michel Gondry to cut the video for the duet with Gallagher on "Let Forever Be." The video was as groundbreaking as it was frightening, it told the story of a young woman's nightmare's becoming a reality. The genre the Chemical Brother's help pioneer may not sell a hundreds of thousands of records, yet the imagination and the work that goes into a record of theirs, especially one like Surrender cannot go overlooked. Due to the work of The Chemical Brothers, the genre is coming back in a big way with bands like Justice, Simian Mobile Disco and Spank Rock. These artists to name a few have taken what Rowlands and Simons and ushered in a new era. Surrender is one of the pivotal albums of the late 90's and should not be missed. It will have you head bobbing and dancing in no time.
