Great Soundtracks - Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction was not only the greatest movie of the 90's, it is not only one of the greatest films of all time, it is a film that altered the landscape of cinema forever and for the better. With Tarantino's non-linear storytelling and cast of characters that only he could conjure up and bring to life, it is why after 20 years we are still in awe of this film. Yet, just as brilliant as it was to watch, Pulp Fiction was also something for all senses and it's soundtrack was just as brilliantly assembled as its film.
Pulp Fiction did not have a traditional movie score, so Tarantino used surf-rock, early rock and roll and soul as the backing music for his work of art. The soundtrack consists of nine songs from the film, snippets of dialogue from the movie that set-up each song and six songs that were not featured in the film. From the classic sounds of Kool and the Gang, Dick Dale, Al Green, Ricky Nelson, The Lively Ones to Urge Overkill's brilliant cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon," the songs and the tracklisting brought the soundtrack to the number 21 position on the Billboard 200 charts and making the album platinum in album sales. Thanks to the success of Pulp Fiction's musical compilation, Kool and the Gang, Neil Diamond, Dick Dale and traditional surf rock saw a resurgence of interest for years. Still, 20 years later, just like the film, the music is just as timeless.
