QUICK SPINS

David BowieBlackstar
It has been nearly two weeks since David Bowie passed on and two weeks since he released his final studio masterpiece and body of work, Blackstar. The record, which was made during his battle with cancer, is indeed his goodbye letter to fans and the parting gift of his courage, spirit and true artistry. It is in fact, one of the finest albums of his in a very long time.
FINAL GRADE: A

SavagesThe Answer
The London based post-punk band returns and defies the sophomore slump. Building on the critically acclaimed debut they unleashed to the world two years ago, they fire back with The Answer. A record that mixes the hop of new wave, the despair of cold wave and the attitude of the 21st Century post-punk sound they are after.
FINAL GRADE: A

SuedeNight Thoughts
After their blockbuster return in 2013, Suede are back again with Night Thoughts. The record dips more into the darkness that they are known for while giving the savvy and slick musical ability to make a pop song about death sound sexy.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Hinds Leave Me Alone
The fine Spanish export that is Hinds arrives to North America with their debut Leave Me Alone. It is a firey album of Latin fury and angst that mixes so well over the ladies fine garage pop hooks. Certainly one of the year’s best new artists already and one to keep an eye out on.
FINAL GRADE: A-

NEVERMEN
The long awaited debut from Tunde of TV on the Radio, Mike Patton and Doseone is an album of strange noises and funky riffs. The record is an experiment into what they can do together but what they can give to fans as a collective piece of art. You can’t say you are surprised by the record but you are still left feeling uncomfortable.
FINAL GRADE: B

ChairliftMoth
The Brooklyn duo are back with a record that finds the perfect way to balance old and new schools of synth pop. Taking influences from Yaz, New Order and Boy George and mixing it with a fresh blend of contemporary ideas, Moth flies pretty high for them.
FINAL GRADE: B

RihannaANTI
After much anticipation and excitement, Rihanna unleashed ANTI to the world and even at her popularity the singer still does not give a fuck what people think of her and does her own thing. While the record feels brave parts of it do feel disjointed, maybe it is a reflection of what she is going through as someone who is brave in the public eye? Could she be giving us a clue in the feel of the record? That is a conspiracy we will let you figure out but in the meantime, listen to the album and have a feel for yourself.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Bloc Party Hymns
It says Bloc Party on the title, it has some members of the original Bloc Party that put out four records together but it doesn’t sound nor feel like a Bloc Party record. Hymns is this band trying something new, both in members and in sounds. Dabbling and progressing in areas that they have not gone before like using acoustic guitars, world music and more melody rather than funk. Hymns is certainly not the best album they have put out however, it is a shift if who they were.
FINAL GRADE: B-

DaughterNot To Disappear
The English trio return with a record that was crafted in Brooklyn and bring their alternative pop to a new level. Leaving England behind, the record feels less British and more American influenced as they look to broaden their horizons.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Sia This Is Acting
Australia’s best pop songwriter of this century returns to shake up the radio friendly world of music and certainly succeeds but gives us more of the same of what she has already done.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The National's Matt Berninger spoke to The Independent about the band's recording process for their upcoming album. He said: "We're trying to get in a room together more often for the next record and that’s been really fun, not tinkering over things obsessively on our own. We’ve been getting a lot of loose ideas together and just getting in a room and fucking around and having a blast for like a week. We also want to play a lot of songs live before we record them this time as it can help us better figure them out."

Will NWA ever tour together? Ice Cube spoke to Rolling Stone about the idea and said: "Well, I don't really know the status. Making the movie was a monster, and we had to really concentrate on that. Some things are easier said than done, and I don't know where everybody's head is at. I hope people will see us out on that stage together soon, but it's really up to Dre and Ren and Yella. You might see some of us; you might not see all of us."

After years of rumors, Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan confirmed that David Bowie did in fact audition for the Oscar winning trilogy. He told The Huffington Post: "As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. And I'm assuming he read for Gandalf. I can't think of anything else he would've read for. He may have read for something else, but I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and I was lucky enough to know his son now so just seeing him in person was pretty special to me."

Diplo has become a minority state holder in MLS expansion club Arizona United. The producer and DJ said in a statement: "I’ve been really fortunate to travel all over the world and experience different cultures through music. Wherever I am, Jamaica, Spain, England, China, etc., soccer is a social constant. I wanted to figure out a way to get involved with the game and team sports so when Arizona United presented itself, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I see soccer the same way I see music, as a connective tissue linking the world’s cultures.”

Following Trent Reznor and Mick Jagger, Bono has eulogized David Bowie in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. The U2 frontman wrote that the late British icon was "my kind of rock star." He added: "I'd like to consider myself David's friend, but I'm more of a fan. He came and visited us when we were mixing Achtung Baby — and, of course, he had introduced us to Berlin and to Hansa Studios."

Kanye West has changed the name of his new album from SWISH to Waves. He also released a new tracklisting via Twitter:

Following the departure of Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend, singer Erza Koenig took to Instagram to discuss his departure and the band's upcoming album.
A couple years ago, Rostam and I sat down at his house & talked abt whether our collaboration was dependent on being members of the same band. We both firmly agreed that nope, it was not. In fact, we agreed that our collaboration was more important. I'm psyched about the work we've already begun for LP4 and I'm psyched to hear anything else Rostam is a part of. Also very excited to continue playing music with CT and Baio but there will be plenty of time to talk about that later in the year. For now in the Vampire Weekend universe, it's all about recording the next album. There will be a lot of familiar faces in the studio but also some fresh, new ones. Working title is "Mitsubishi Macchiato"...for obvious reasons. Shout-out to the fans who have been waiting for new music - it's coming. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Also tomorrow, we gotta talk abt Iowa.

'With My Words I've Borrowed Your Time' Bowie Tributes Continue

It has now been over two weeks since David Bowie passed away and still tributes are pouring in from fans, friends and famous faces. Bowie's legacy is left within his music and talents but those that knew him best share a different side and stories of what the public didn't know.

Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger reflected on his friendship with The Thin White Duke for an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone. Jagger said: "There was always an exchange of information within our friendship. And I suppose there was always an element of competition between us, but it never felt overwhelming. When he'd come over, we'd talk about our work — a new guitarist, a new way of writing, style and photographers. We had a lot in common in wanting to do big things onstage — using interesting designs, narratives, personalities." Jagger added: "He had a chameleon-like ability to take on any genre, always with a unique take, musically and lyrically."

In the same issue, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who famously toured with Bowie in the 90s and worked with him on his Outside and Earthlings records said: "It feels like the loss of a mentor, fatherly figure, someone looking out for you, reminding you that in a world where the bar keeps seeming to be lower, where stupidity has got a foothold, there is room for excellence and uncompromising vision." He added that it was Bowie who helped him get sober, saying:
"There were a number of times where the two of us were alone, and he said some things that weren't scolding, but pieces of wisdom that stuck with me: "You know, there is a better way here, and it doesn't have to end in despair or in death, in the bottom."

Speaking to Vulture, Interpol's Paul Banks discussed how Bowie helped young musicians. He said: "
Long-term, it just kind of said, Bowie was awesome. Bowie stayed involved, and he went out of his way to support young artists, as we’ve seen after he came to our show. I just think that it’s cool, the same way that Elton John seems to be super up on new music. Bowie was an artist all the way, and a generous one who liked to tell other artists that he was a supporter. That was such a great gift for someone of his caliber to give to a young band."

Michael C. Hall, who just finished playing Lazarus in Bowie's stage adaptation of his film, The Man Who Fell to Earth, which was off-Broadway, spoke to Billboard about how it was to work and learn from him as an actor. He said: "To play that role and to take part in telling that story and helping to create something that was in the final chapter of Bowie's artistic output, it was really incredible."

Pete Doherty spoke to Noisy China about how he and Carl Barat came together to form The Libertines. He said: "I met Carl and in the same way that I was outraged that UCL wouldn't take me, he was outraged at how no modelling agencies would give him a contract," Doherty recalls in the video interview. He'd sit outside the modelling agencies and all these beautiful boys would be coming out, he'd go 'Look at him, I'm much better looking than him. Let's go beat him up and get his contract.' I was not so much amused by him as frightened by him, but I needed to learn to play guitar and he needed someone to push him and believe in him. So we both just thought 'Fuck it, we'll form a band.'"

Iggy Pop spoke to Beats 1 on how his current collaboration with Josh Homme came out. He said:

Great Soundtracks: Pretty in Pink

The 80s had a sound that was all together daring, experimental but above all, innocent and nothing captured the sound of the decade better than the soundtrack to Pretty in Pink. The classic music to the John Hughes motion picture will turn 30 next month and to celebrate we picked it as our Great Soundtrack.

With music from Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, New Order, OMD, INXS, and others, the record captured the entire essence of what the film was about, what the decade was about and most of all, what the youth were about. Thirty years later, a majority of the bands are still listened to and now considered legends and eve contenders for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the benchmark this soundtrack created proves why it is a timeless masterpiece.

Recommended Reading: 'Chapter and Verse: New Order, Joy Division & Me'

Just a few years after his former bandmate Peter Hook released his autobiography about the account of what happened within Joy Division and parts of New Order, Bernard Sumner got his rebuttal. In 2014, the leader of New Order and former guitarist of Joy Division released his autobiography Chapter & Verse: New Order, Joy Division & Me. The book chronicles his childhood in Manchester to being in two of the biggest and influential indie rock bands of all time.

The book, which is much more cut and dry than Hooky's, is an introspective and interesting read but at often points Sumner has a hard time telling a story. However, for any fan of either of the bands it is a worthwhile pickup, simply because the accounts and details of what went on behind the scenes is enough to make you want to start your own band and hit the road.

Live Review: Brian Fallon @ Marlin Room of Webster Hall

In the first solo outing to prep his new solo album, Painkillers, available in March, Gaslight Anthem singer Brian Fallon brought along familiar faces with him as he closed out leg one of the tour in New York City.

In a show that was supposed to be held in the 250-person capacity Studio at Webster Hall, the demand grew that they moved it upstairs into the Marlin Room to add in another 100 people. With Fallon was his backing band The Crowes, which many fans will recognize was his first side project from Gaslight -- The Horrible Crowes. Rebranded and redubbed, Fallon and his friends hit the small stage to the delight of an audience that packed in to see their favorite songwriter in a very small setting on a very cold night.

"You don't have to be here, so, I thank you. I mean that," Fallon told the crowd about halfway through his 90-minute set. With songs that were from Elsie, The Horrible Crowes' first album, new songs that made their Manhattan debut from Painkillers and a few covers of Molly and the Zombies and Springsteen, Fallon gave everyone a taste of what it is like inside his head and heart.

"I am just a guy in a jean jacket," he said to the crowd as he was involved in serious stage banter with his band mates. As people screamed out Gaslight Anthem song titles,  Fallon would fire back and say "don't be stupid" as the crowd ate it up. It wasn't his main band, it was him, fully exposed for the songwriter and artist that he is or just the guy in a jean jacket that plays guitar. However you want to look at it, his heart, mind, and soul, is in his music and exposed for the world to hear.

Quick News

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has confirmed that Wednesday, January 20 is David Bowie Day in the city.

Speaking of Bowie, the late and great legend turned down an opportunity to be featured on a Coldplay song. Drummer Will Champion told NME that the band once approached the "Ziggy Stardust" singer to be featured on a song and Bowie apparently replied: "It's not a very good song, is it?" Champion then added: "He was very discerning – he wouldn't just put his name to anything. I'll give him credit for that!"

Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def has apparently quit music and acting and will release his final album this year.

Before the Syrian civil war, the countries orchestra had performed with Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and now the singer is looking to reunite the performers. Albarn and the orchestra under the conducting of Isaam Rafea will perform in London in June. It will be their first performance as an orchestra in five years.

In a new interview with Collide Art & Culture, Thurston Moore doesn't seem to understand why he is being blamed for the end of Sonic Youth. The singer was having an affair for years even though his wife Kim Gordon was in the band. The band ended in 2011 and he is now coming forward talking about the aftermath. He said: "I find it really strange that I get demonised [sic] for the break-up of Sonic Youth when I myself had no intention of breaking up the band; that was a real surprise to me. I get the reasons behind the band not existing at the moment — everyone has to be on the same page — but there was never any announcement. Well, I never made one." He added: "For me, it goes on and won’t end. I write songs now and people say, “It sounds kinda like Sonic Youth” — well, that’s my vocabulary, you know. What you’re not hearing is Lee and Kim because they’re not playing the music with me, so it’s a different situation."

Speaking to Rolling Stone, RZA has confirmed that an Ol Dirty Bastard biopic is in the works. He said: "I think it's a great idea, and there has been talk about it. There are a few wheels in motion with one done by our first cousin Rayshawn. He was the young guy there watching everything that happened. Him and ODB's wife have been talking and he has a pretty interesting script. I just saw a 12-minute teaser that he shot about a year ago and it felt pretty fucking cool. I watched it and was like, 'Wow, you may have something here.' He has the best thing that I've seen so far."

In a recent YouTube interview, President Obama was asked who would win a rap battle Drake or Kendrick Lamar. The Commander-in-Chief said without hesitation - King Kendrick.

David Bowie now has a constellation of stars named after him thanks to a Belgian radio station and star observatory. MIRA Public Observatory and Studio Brussels have named seven stars in the form of a lightning bolt to honor the Thin White Duke who passed away on Sunday.
Philippe Mollet from MIRA explained the inspiration for the constellation in a statement obtained by Pitchfork: "It was not easy to determine the appropriate stars. Studio Brussels asked us to give Bowie a unique place in the galaxy. Referring to his various albums, we chose seven stars - Sigma Librae, Spica, Alpha Virginis, Zeta Centauri, SAA 204 132, and the Beta Sigma Octantis Trianguli Australis - in the vicinity of Mars. The constellation is a copy of the iconic Bowie lightning and was recorded at the exact time of his death."

You can log onto the website Stardust for Bowie and name a song within the constellation.

In a statement, the family said:
THANK YOU
The family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend.
They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times.
We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world.
However, it is important to note that while the concerts and tributes planned for the coming weeks are all welcome, none are official memorials organized or endorsed by the family.
Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David's music, we welcome everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit.

In the days after his death, his posthumously setting records. Billboard reported that he will have the No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week with his latest, Blackstar, which was released last Friday on his 69th birthday. It will be Bowie's first No.1 album ever on the Billboard chart.

Also, Bowie's video for "Lazarus" broke a Vevo record that was held by Adele for most video views in day with 11.1 million views.

One of the Thin White Duke's closest friends and colleagues, Iggy Pop, shared an emotional eulogy to the late singer in The New York Times.

Pop said: "The friendship was basically that this guy salvaged me from certain professional and maybe personal annihilation — simple as that. A lot of people were curious about me, but only he was the one who had enough truly in common with me, and who actually really liked what I did and could get on board with it, and who also had decent enough intentions to help me out. He did a good thing."

"He resurrected me. He was more of a benefactor than a friend in a way most people think of friendship. He went a bit out of his way to bestow some good karma on me," Pop added. "I learned things that I still use today. I met the Beatles and the Stones, and this one and that one, and this actress and this actor and all these powerful people through him. And I watched. And every once in a while, now at least, I’m a little less rustic when I have to deal with those people."

According to longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti, the "Changes" singer was planning on releasing new music, even though Blackstar would be his "farewell gift" to fans.

Visconti told Rolling Stone: "At that late stage, he was planning the follow-up to 'Blackstar', and I was thrilled. And I thought, and he thought, that he’d have a few months, at least. Obviously, if he’s excited about doing his next album, he must’ve thought he had a few more months. So the end must’ve been very rapid. I’m not privy to it. I don’t know exactly, but he must’ve taken ill very quickly after that phone call.”

He also talked about how his friend told him he had the disease, saying: "He just came fresh from a chemo session, and he had no eyebrows, and he had no hair on his head, and there was no way he could keep it a secret from the band. But he told me privately, and I really got choked up when we sat face to face talking about it.” Although the chemo initially seemed successful and Bowie went into remission in the middle of 2015, the cancer suddenly returned in November, and he knew that it was terminal."
