He said: ""Including a lot of my really rough demos - I'm not suggesting they're finished, by any means - there's actually 50 pieces of music that I've put time into. Some of them have not been arranged or performed by the band, but there's 50 ideas, and probably about 20 that we're actually really excited about. So we've got some ways to narrow it down, but we're in good shape."

Live Review: Savages @ Irving Plaza

Fresh off a critically acclaimed European tour, London's Savages made their way across the pond and began their North American tour in Washington on Sunday before arriving in New York on Monday for two sold-out gigs across the city.

For their first gig, the female quartet performed at Irving Plaza on Monday night and brought an intensity that is so difficult to describe, it can only be experienced. The band, who are touring behind their fantastic sophomore LP, Adore Life, which they released in January, took the momentum they received in Europe and used it in New York. Opening with "I Am Here," the band set the mood straight away with their lighting and tone. As strobe lights were used for effect and sparse white lights were used minimally on stage, the band's dark but hopeful sound peaked through as they painted the room with their music.

Savages, who are based in London, are so quintessentially European they could be from Paris, Berlin, Glasgow, Milan or even Madrid. Their sound is post-punk, post-hardcore, and no bullshit. They are just as much influenced by Joy Division as they are Fugazi, they are also just as much influenced by Depeche Mode as they are Sleater-Kinney. Taking their moody music to New York is as seemless as riding a subway, which explains the high demand whenever they come to Gotham. Singer Jehnny Beth, who is originally from France, is one of the most underrated frontwomen in music today. She commands the stage like a drill sergeant but also moves in such hypnotic fashion it is hard not to take your eyes off of her. Ripping through songs like "Sad Person," "City's Full," "Slowing Down the World" and "Shut Up," each and every single person in that room was so awe struck, it didn't matter that it was Monday night, they wanted more -- and you couldn't blame them.

During the set, Beth would crowdsurf, stand on the hands of the audience as they would pull her out to the center of the room and climb the mountain of fans as all of Irving Plaza had their eyes (and phones) transfixed on what she would do next. In an era when girl power is rightfully more in the forefront than ever before, this was one lady with more chutzpah than most. As the band would raise the decibel levels as high as they could without sounding like garbage, Savages were feasting on their own powers. They may not look like it, but they clearly are having the time of their lives.

As they plowed through fan favorites like "The Answer," "T.I.W.Y.G.," "Hit Me," "Adore" and the closer, "Fuckers," Beth professed her love for the city and what it means to her and the band. "Last year we played nine shows here while we were making Adore Life, thank you for letting us test some of the early versions out," she said. The singer also thanked one fan, who was in attendance, that was at all nine gigs in 2015, "I am glad you are alive," she told him. The whole room was glad they came alive to witness what they did.

Dave Grohl took to social media on Wednesday to defend a teenage English band that allegedly got in trouble for playing too loud in a practice space in a small town. Grohl tweeted:
Now, the city of Cornwall, England, has responded to the claims. Saying in a statement: "The Council is legally required to investigate once it has received a complaint about noise. In this case we have received a number of complaints about the level of noise. We have not, however, told the band to stop playing or told them they must keep sound levels below 40 decibels. We have not prescribed a set noise level but have advised that the sound levels are currently too high. We have offered to work with them to look at ways of reducing the noise levels by suggesting they look at installing some sound proofing into the garage to address the problem or possibly compromise by looking at playing only at certain times. We have spoken to the owner of the property on three occasions so far and are arranging to visit them to try and identify a solution. We are certainly not trying to stop the band from practising but we have to take into consideration the views of all parties."

Remembering Phife Dawg

As the music world mourns the passing of Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest, his fellow band members released a statement on Wednesday evening eulogizing their brother's passing.

Read: Rest in Peace: Phife Dawg

The statement said: "Our hearts are heavy. We are devastated. This is something we weren't prepared for although we all know that life is fleeting. It was no secret about his health and his fight. But the fight for his joy and happiness gave him everything he needed. The fight to keep his family happy, his soul happy and those around him happy, gave him complete and unadulterated joy... until he heeded his fathers call.

"We love his family his mother, his father, his son, his wife, his nieces, his family here in New York, Atlanta, California and Trinidad.

"Thank you for the outpouring of prayers and support from the fans, fellow artists, music outlets, blogs, radio stations, DJ's, social media and the music community at large. This too is part of his joy and means a lot to him. His family is overwhelmed by the support, well wishes and are thankful. His music and what he's contributed is seismic and hard to measure. He's affected us as much as he's affected all of you. We're inspired by his daily joy and courage. He wasn't in pain. He was happy.

"We take comfort in knowing he will be beside his grandmother. "

Went to Sound Of Market to purchase Nefertiti, In A Silent Way & Live Evil---the only non jazz purchase I made that day ironically was the most jazziest album in that collection: #TheLowEndTheory by @ATCQ. ---it was raining that day so somehow the 1...2 punch of "Nefertiti"/"Fall" just had me in a trance that train trip---even though I suspected there was a possibility that Tribe could possibly have made a better album then their debut (the perfect @@@@@ mic Source rating would be on stands in a week so I was right)---but I knew I wanted to save that listening for when I got up to the campus w Riq.---so some 90mins later when I get to his dorm--we ripped that bad boy open (I can't describe the frustration that was CD packaging in 1991, just imagine the anger that environmentalists feel when all that paper packaging in Beats headphone gets wasted---it's like that)---the sign of a true classic is when a life memory is burnt in your head because of the first time you hear a song. ---Riq & I had this moment a few times, but the look on our faces when we 1st heard "Buggin Out" was prolly Me & Tariq's greatest "rewind selector!" moment in our friendship. (Back then every MC's goal was to have that "rewind!!!" moment. As in to say something so incredible. Or to catch you by surprise that it makes you go "DAAAAAYUM!!!"& you listen over & over---Malik "Phife" Taylor's verse was such a gauntlet/flag planting moment in hip hop. Every hip hop head was just...stunned HE. CAME. FOR. BLOOD & was taking NO prisoners on this album (or ever again) we just kept looking at the speaker on some disbelief old timey radio Suspense episode. & also at each other "Phife is KILLIN!"--by the time we got to "Scenario" I swear to god THAT was the moment I knew I wanted to make THIS type of music when I grew up--(yeah yeah dad I know: "go to Juilliard or Curtis to make a nice living at "real music") but he didn't know that Phife & his crew already wrote my destiny. You better call Mr. Babyface so he can bring out the cool in you. Or it'll be a sad love song being sung by Toni Braxton. And I'll dissect you like a fraction. Oh you wanna be top cat MC? Live Review: Jake Bugg @ Bowery Ballroom

In the SXSW hangover, one of Britain's favorite new songs concluded a short U.S. tour in New York City. Jake Bugg, who performed in Austin, Texas, seven times last week during the festival added one final gig to his small tour with a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom.

Bugg, whose new album, On My One, will arrive in June, opening his set, which started at 9pm sharp with the album's title track. It is a rocking song that doesn't fill a room quite like some of the singles off his Rick Rubin-produced Shagri La, but enough to still make you become in awe of the young singer. The album, which will hear Bugg play every single instrument, seems to be a throwback to his first record, his critically acclaimed 2012 self-titled debut. As he showcased more songs from the upcoming LP with his small band, Bugg barnstormed through almost everything he had.

As fans packed the small venue, it became a rare treat to see the 22-year-old in a tiny place. The last time Bugg was in town, two years ago, he played two nights to much larger crowds at sold-out concerts at Terminal 5. Now, the die hards who are waiting for new music and a chance to see him again before he explodes on the festival scene, came through on a Monday night.

"I know it is Monday and everyone is tired but thanks for being here," he told the crowd. In the 75-minutes he was on stage he played fan favorites like "Two Fingers," "Lightning Bolt," "Me and You," and "A Song About Love." Noticeably absent was "What Doesn't Kill You," which left some fans confused since he had no encore, many were anticipating that to be featured in the set. Alas, in the 20-song setlist, he opted to showcase new tunes. Songs like "Bitter Salt," "The Love We're Hoping For," "Livin' Up Country" all made their New York City debut.

While Bugg doesn't really do much on stage, he lets the music do the talking. Sounding as sharp as a thumbtac, he displayed his musicianship, vocal range and chops right in the room, which is what he wants you to focus on. With On My One on it's way, it seems the music world will be focusing a whole lot more on Jake Bugg.

The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs — repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night. He can’t work. He has no quality of life. If you call him and ask how he is, he will say, ‘Everything’s okay,’ because that’s just how he is. But everything is not okay." For more information and ways to donate, click here.

VINTAGE CLIP: Iggy Pop on Letterman

As Iggy Pop celebrates the release of his new and possibly final album, Post Pop Depression, take a look at this VINTAGE CLIP of punk's godfather on Late Night with David Letterman in 1990.

Recommended Reading: Punk USA

Lookout! Records were a record label that helped define the 80s and early 90s punk scene in California's Bay Area. Signing bands like Green Day, Operation Ivy, The Mr. T Experience among the many they had on their roster, they would craft a sound that would move a generation out of the grunge era and into something so much brighter but just as important. Author Kevin Prested captured the importance, rise and fall of Lookout! in his 2014 novel, Punk USA.

The book, which gives an account as to how founder Lawrence Livermore founded the label to fund his own band The Lookouts album sessions in 1987, to how he discovered Green Day and released their first two albums. By the mid 90s the band were bringing in more money than they could imagine until one day it all went away. It is a story of rock and roll behind the scenes of the sex and drugs and the business end of things that came crashing down. In an era when major labels struggle, this is a lesson they could learn.

Great Soundtracks: Good Will Hunting

Good Will Hunting helped two struggling actors from Boston become household names and win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 1998 Academy Awards. The film, which became an indie classic, also helped define the music of the late 90s. The decade started off with the aggression and anger of hip-hop and grunge but ended with the melancholy and dark sounds of the new emerging indie artists that would define the next decade thanks to the influence they had on musicians arriving in the new Millennium.

Using the music of Elliot Smith, The Waterboys, Luscious Jackson, The Dandy Warhols and the orchestral arraignments of Danny Elfman, director Gus Van Sant surrendered the audience to the mood he wanted to paint with the film through song. Smith was even nominated for an Oscar for his song "Miss Misery," but would lose to one of the biggest songs of all time -- Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. Now, nearly 20 years later, the record plays more than just the songs from a film but a moment in time.

The Irish Mixtape

As the world celebrates Ireland's patron saint, St. Patrick, they have given the world so much more than just a day to wear green, eat cornbeef and cabbage or soda bread and drink.

From the beers and whiskeys to the poets and authors, as well as some of the greatest actors of a generation, including, arguably the greatest of all time -- Daniel Day Lewis, the emerald island has given so much to pop culture, sport and the arts.

We look at Ireland's musical heroes from U2 to Thin Lizzy to Glen Hansard and so on.

Take a listen to our Irish Mixtape.

Live Pix: Pig Destroyer @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

Pig Destroyer played one of their largest headlining sets in New York City on Friday as they sold-out Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Our very own RICH D SMOOV was on hand to capture some of the action, or as he put it "it was like I was in survival mode. The whole show, the whole pit was brutal. All I could do was just survive."

Take a look at his pix.

Motion City Soundtrack are calling it quits after almost 18 years. In a press statement, the band said: "It has been a quiet winter for us. We’ve had some time at home after a very busy 2015. With this time, we've been able to think about the past, present, and future of Motion City Soundtrack. All of this thinking has lead to several conversations, and these conversations have lead us to a very bittersweet realization: We have no idea what the future holds, but for now we are done. Needless to say, we’re feeling all the feels - you may be as well. If so, or if you’ve ever been touched by our music, we ask you to come out and sing along with us one last time in 2016."

Live Review: Greg Dulli @ Roulette

Since the late 1980s Greg Dulli has been making music and has proven himself as one of America's greatest lyricists and poets. From his work with The Afghan Whigs to The Twilight Singers to The Gutter Twins and his own solo material, the Ohio musician has lived and told it all. This year, while rumors of another solo record are in the air, Dulli took all of the material he has written and recorded and brought it on the road for a rare tour that featured hired guns and some of the backing musicians of The Afghan Whigs. Dubbed "An Evening With Greg Dulli," it made it's second North America stop in Brooklyn on Friday night at the intimate BAM affiliate - Roulette.

Taking the stage and opening with "If I Were Going" the sold-out crowd of near 700 cheered as if triple the amount of people were in the room. Dulli couldn't do anything but smile. The rush he must has felt to have that crowd make that type of noise straight away was indescribable. As they rolled right into "The Body" and then a cover of Bjork's "Hyperballad," which Dulli, like most of his covers, transformed and stripped from the original to make it its own folk-meets-Americana sound, the speakers began to crack and give out. As the roadie and tech, Larry, scrambled to fix the problem and bring on a new speaker, the band played on. "Hey, it's rock and roll," Dulli told the enthusiastic crowd. "We are going to go off script," at which point he took the piano and began playing songs that were not featured on any setlist. It was his show, it was his idea, no one could stop him.

In the near 115-minute set, Dulli took fans through a timeline of his music. Songs like "Too Tough to Die," "Summer's Kiss," "So Tight," "Demon in Profile," "My Funny Valentine," all took on new interpretations and meaning. As he strummed with just his acoustic guitar, it took some of the edge off the songs, which many did not feature a proper drummer, instead relied solely on the percussion of their strumming or stomping legs.

As 11p.m. hit, the unbelievable show came to an end and a humble Dulli thanked the people of the New York metro area for always supporting his work. He shared his gratitude by meeting fans after the show for photos and autographs. After getting an in-your-face look into his music, one thing was for sure, Dulli, who is one of America's greatest lyricists and poets is also one of musics most underrated.
