Movie of the Month: 'Miss Bala'

The best film to come from Mexico since Y Tu Mama Tambien, 2011's Miss Bala is a thought provoking, provocative and intense thriller that combines the fashion world and Mexico's infamous drug cartels. The Gerardo Naranjo-directed film tells the story of how a beauty queen gets unwillingly swept up in Mexico's violent drug trade. Kidnapping her brother, the cartel tells the beauty queen that she must comply to their rules or else he will perish. In a series of drug deals and beauty competitions, she wins the Miss Bala beauty content only for things to take a dramatic turn for everyone involved. In intriguing look at what feels like an all too real motion picture. Following the capture of El Chapo earlier this year, the intrigue of Mexican cartels has intensified and while this film is fictional, sheds a light on what life is like for many.
