Underrated Classic: Mudhoney 'Superfuzz Bigmuff'
Mudhoney never got the respect and due they deserved. The Seattle band helped usher in grunge but became overshadowed by some of the bands they came up with like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. Mudhoney were very profound and important to the scene and if you need proof, their 1988 album, Superfuzz Bigmuff, named after their favorite guitar pedals - the Univox Super-Fuzz and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff -is a dirty, dark and heavy record to endure. From thrashing riffs to pulsing rhythms, their debut helped spark some interest in the new grunge genre before it exploded a handful of years later in the mainstream. The record, released via Sub Pop, is a blueprint to what grunge would become, yet, these pioneers never hit the mainstream like their colleagues. The record was a critical success but never achieved the commercial status as they may have hoped. In 2008, they reissued the album with demos and their original EP. Now, nearly 30 years later, Superfuzz Bigmuff, is just as influential more than ever. As the revitalization of all things 90s seems be popular in modern culture, this late 80s gem is one to study and embrace.
