Portugal. The Man have announced that their new album, Woodstock, will arrive in June. The record features production from Danger Mouse, and Beastie Boy Mike D. Take a look at the cover, below:

It has been a big week for Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett as the new Gorillaz album, Humanz, has finally arrived and the singer had a massive press week where he dove in on everything from Blur, Gorillaz, and working with Noel Gallagher. So, we will bullet point the highlights:
  • As far as a new Blur record goes, the singer said he is unsure if the Britpop band will make another record. He told Rolling Stone: "We’re all really good friends. And I feel like I’ve given many of my best years to Blur, so I don’t feel guilty in that sense. I’ve never said I’d never make another record. It’s all the same thing at the end of the day. It’s the nuances that make it different. It’s just more music, to add to the mountain of music there already is.”
  •  Hewlett told Exclaim that a Gorillaz animated series is finally in the works and will air next year. "I’ll direct the first and the last one, but we’ll have to get someone in to direct the other episodes. I think even attempting to do it all by myself will kill me." He added: "Everybody does CGI now, and it is great when you’re making backgrounds, like environments and landscapes, but not the actual characters. I’m still very much inspired by the work of Chuck Jones, and I love that animation. It’s art. I’d like to keep the characters in that style for the rest of this campaign. So the characters on the show will be 2D, but everything else is up for grabs.”
  • Finally, Noel Gallagher revealed to Vulture that he invited Damon Albarn to play on his new solo record but they are unsure if he can do it because it all depends on their schedules. Gallagher, who was once rivals with Albarn, appears on the new Gorillaz album and was asked by Vulture what he thinks his brother, former Oasis singer, Liam Gallagher, would think of him performing on the record, the "Mighty I" singer replied: "Listen, nobody gives a fuck what Liam thinks about anything.”
That of course did not sit well with Liam, who took to Twitter and said:

Recommended Reading: 'NYHC'

Following the emergence of punk in the Big Apple in the mid-to-late 1970s, by the early 80s, a new form of the genre was taking shape and would become an imprint and fixture in New York City for generations -- hardcore. In 2014, Tony Rettman documented the first decade and rise of the scene in his book, NYHC. As the misfits from the Lower East Side of the city would play in clubs and bars in the area as well as Chinatown and the Limelight, NYHC became the blueprint of balls to the wall music and aggro. Bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of It Hall, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, all emerged from the scene as leaders and heroes. All the bands still play today.

NYHC is not just a document on the era but an account as to what happened and told by some of the people who lived it and continue to push for it. With over 100 interviews from members of Misfits, Kraut, Death Before Dishonor, Absolution, Adrenalin O.D., Agnostic Front, Antidote, Bad Brains, Bloodclot, Bold, Born Against, Breakdown, Cause for Alarm, Citizen Arrest, H20, and more, NYHC is the definitive account of what happened by who created it and watched.

Great Soundtracks: 'Natural Born Killers'

1994 was a memorable year for movies as flicks like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, The Crow, True Lies, The Lion King, Quiz Show, Shawshank Redemption, and countless others. One film, written by Quentin Tarantino busted down the door and had heads turning that summer and it was the Oliver Stone-helmed Natural Born Killers. The violent film about killers on the run in America had audiences gasping. One of the catalysts that drove the suspense of the story was the music.

Stone tapped Trent Reznor to produce the soundtrack and the Nine Inch Nails creator saw a different take as to how the music should be put out. Instead of just throwing songs together on a playlist and having his Nothing label put it out, he gathered tunes from the music of the era, his friends, and even crafted original songs and spliced them together with dialogue and scenes from the film. By doing this, the listener was able to experience the suspense and thrill ride of what the movie put out on screen.

With a soundtrack that featured NIN, Dr. Dre, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, L7, Peter Gabriel, Cowboy Junkies, The Dogg Pound, Leonard Cohen, and more, the violence on screen was brought into the listeners ears for a full on experience that still resonates today.

Rise Against Announce New Album

Rise Against will release their new album, Wolves, in June.

"In many ways, a Rise Against show is a safe space for our fans," singer Tim McIlrath said in a press release. "But I realized that I don't only want to create safe spaces, I want to create dangerous spaces where misogyny can't exist, where xenophobia can't exist. I want to create spaces where those sentiments don't have any air, and they suffocate: where those ideas die. WOLVES isn't about creating a safe space, it's about creating a space that's dangerous for injustice."

QUICK SPINS

Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.

“You all got ‘til April 7 to get your shit together,” that line came in the form of a call to arms to every rapper alive as Kendrick Lamar released “The Heart Pt. 4,” a song that is a stand alone single that doesn’t even appear on his latest record. Once April 7 came, it was announced he was releasing a new album the following week – which would be Good Friday on the Christian calendar. As the week went on, new info on the album titled DAMN., would arrive and as it came at the stroke of Midnight on April 14, the world wasn’t ready. DAMN., isn’t Pimping a Butterfly again nor is it a good kid going back to the maad city.. It is Kendrick Lamar solidifying himself as the best rapper alive and a top five emcee. As he uses the words thrown against him, the headlines that are flashed around the news, DAMN. is a record that is just as much in the ethos of punk rock as it is in hip-hop. If Johnny Rotten fronted The Clash it would have that attitude and political / social rawness and awareness. Yet, Lamar, who is a fan of jazz, Afropunk, rock, and clearly 90s rap and R&B, he mixes his influences together with a record that is not just the best to come out in 2017 but an album that has the Compton rapper touching the arch of music history.
FINAL GRADE: A+

Joey Bada$$ All Amerikkkan Bada$$

Just a week before Kendrick Lamar made headlines with DAMN., Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ released his sophomore album and continues to build on the momentum he created with his stellar debut, B4 Da Money. All Amerikkkan Bada$$ is lyrical fuck you to the system, Trump, and anyone who is trying to pin someone down. Bada$$ proves he is not just one of the best young rappers around today but he goes swinging for the big leagues and if there was a record that could make everyone pay attention to him, this is it.
FINAL GRADE: A

Future Islands The Far Field

On their fifth record, Baltimore experimental outfit Future Islands delivers their thunderous best. The Far Field is a record about obsession, love, passion, and captivation. It is a record that also captures the rawness and intensity of their live shows and even gets applause from heavy hitters like Debbie Harry from Blondie who appears on the album to led her voice.
FINAL GRADE: A

MastodonEmperor of Sand

The Georgia metal monsters return with a record that is totally full circle. Emperor of Sand is a record that cherry picks nearly every type of metal, rock, and prog that the band have done over the years on each of their albums and puts it together that it not only pleases old fans but new ones as well.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Arca

The Venezuelan beatmaker and musician returns with his third record and is an expose into his own self. Following the abrasive and uncomfortable Mutant, Arca’s self-titled release is a welcome sound of what music will be in the next five years. Always pushing the envelope and creating the future of music and beats, he still stands out as someone to keep a close eye on.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Maxiimo Park Risk to Exist

On their best album in a decade, Maxiimo Park return to their roots and take influence from Brexit to create a record that would have had people gasping in their heyday. Risk to Exist is an album of catchy tunes with meaning and a band fully realizing who they are as their career has changed course.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Aimee Mann Mental Illness

One of America’s best singer / songwriters returns with a heavy record about an even heavier subject. Mann has put out her saddest, slowest, and most difficult record to date but only she can make something so hard like mental illness and give it a series of songs that showcase the importance as to why this topic is something that needs to be discussed more rather than shunned.
FINAL GRADE: B

PallbearerHeartless

The melodic doom metal band from Arkansas return and continue to put their listeners into a musical chokehold on their latest.
FINAL GRADE: B

MewVisuals

The Danish alternative band return after a few years away from the music world and come back with a record that sticks true to their formula but also fits the mold of the modern era.
FINAL GRADE: B

Nelly FurtadoThe Ride

After five years away, everyone’s favorite Canadian singer /songwriter comes back with more alternative pop classics that combine her love of hip-hop beats and folk flavor. While she describes The Ride as “a hangover album,” the album is one you can listen to sober as well and still enjoy.
FINAL GRADE: B

Joe Goddard Electric Lines

Eight years after his solo debut, the Hot Chip beatmaker and sometimes singer is back with his sophomore effort and is another one of club favorites that feature his clever lyrics and passion for dance.
FINAL GRADE: B

John Mellencamp Sad Clowns and Hillbillies

One of America’s greatest singer / songwriters is back with his latest offering on love, loss, desperation, and how the common man is getting screwed over by the system.
FINAL GRADE: B

Guided By Voices August By Cake

On their first ever double album, Guided By Voices give fans a longer GBV record than usual. It is solid but nothing too left field for the indie vets.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Robyn Hitchcock

The indie singer-songwriter returns with a record produced by The Raconteurs' Brendan Benson and delivers everything you have come to expect.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Incubus8

For their first full length album since 2011’s disappointing If Not Now When?, Incubus come back with 8, a record that had promise following 2015’s fantastic Trust Fall Side A EP. Their latest isn’t just the sound of a band who seem to lost their mojo, it feels as if they are trying too hard in the process. Linking up with Skrillex to produce a number of tracks, the California rockers sound overproduced and uninspired in a record that could have put them back as not just a novelty act but a band who are still serious about the music they make.
FINAL GRADE: C

JamiroquaiAutomaton

Music lovers around the globe rejoiced after British dance rockers Jamiroquai announced a new album earlier this year. Yet, after Automaton arrived, it failed to deliver the promise of what everyone expected. Instead of getting a funky dance album that could push the boundaries of what is currently happening in the genre, they get a formulaic record that doesn’t hit the mark.
FINAL GRADE: C

Father John Misty Pure Comedy

The former Fleet Foxes drummer returns with his third album under the Father John Misty record and we can’t actually tell if we are supposed to take it serious or if the record, like his persona, is a phony act and joke?
FINAL GRADE: D

Cold War KidsL.A. Divine

Cold War Kids had such promise when they arrived on the scene 10 years ago but now album after album, the band sound like a fraction of their former selves and come off like a band that are still grasping for musical straws.
FINAL GRADE: D

Dirty Orange Talk 2 New Singles, No Current Plans For Debut LP

Last year we introduced you to British garage band Dirty Orange and in just a few months, the band has been getting some serious buzz around their country. The London trio are a hybrid of early Arctic Monkeys meets The Stooges. It is a rock and rollers love affair rolled up with a modern twist.

Read Our 2016 Interview with Dirty Orange

After releasing their fantastic EP, Short Story About the Lady of the Night, the band have returned with two brand new singles, "No Life Beyond 20," and "Would You Rather?" In an era when rock and roll is on life support, the two singles help inject some much needed adrenaline. The lead single, "No Life Beyond 20," is a catchy number with serious hooks that is the most Britpop sounding release they have had. "Would You Rather," is a straight punch to the gut with roaring guitars and savage riffs that pin you down to the ground and make you want to scream "uncle" in order to release from its submissive hold.

As the new songs just landed on all streaming services, we spoke to singer George Wilkins about how the band has been coming along since we last spoke a few months back.

After being together for over a year, you have been gigging all over England. How has the experience been?

Eye opening! As an overall experience it has been second to none. Every gig has been mad, for example; not having a kick pedal five minutes before we were due on in Manchester, to eventually playing in front of capacity crowd, which arguably was our best gig to date.

What has being in the band taught you so far?

I think we’ve learnt never to take shortcuts and to not take anything personally. Being a member of Dirty Orange requires a shit load of patience.

How have the crowds been?

Up and down as you can imagine, but we received nothing but positive feedback from crowds in general. People seem to respond well to our sound.

Where has been the best place to play?

Manchester and Camden, Camden isn’t probably what it was in the late 90s and early noughties, but it’s still buzzing every night of the week, and a mega place to gig.

Are you planning a debut?

No just yet, prioritizing, gigging, getting a bigger following and constant improvement… then we’ll start thinking about our debut!

How did the new songs come about? Were they left over from the EP sessions or just two totally new tracks?

‘Would You Rather’ was a brand new song which we decided to record last minute and ‘No Life Beyond 20’ was golden oldie which we had been planning to record for some time.

What inspired the new songs?

‘Would You Rather’ in particular was a real quick process based around a lead break and a drum roll. ‘No Life..’ was a longer progression, which started with telling lyrics, followed with music which perhaps is more widely appealing than our other songs.

When can we expect you in America?

Before the end of 2017 for sure.

What has been the best thing about being in the band thus far?

Being able to express ourselves as individuals and as a band, finally doing what we want to do not what society expects of us. There’s plenty of people out there who feel the same as we do, music just happens to be our medium to say how we feel. You only have to watch Connor play drums for half hour to see how pissed he is with tiling for a living. All in all though, we ain’t stopped learning, we ain’t stopped drinking and we ain’t stopped laughing.

Live Review: Tuelo @ Rockwood Music Hall

Just a month after she and her Cousins played the Apollo Theater, Tuelo returned to her roots as she and the band continued her longstanding Rockwood Music Hall Residency Tuesday night. One what was one of the first nice nights of the year, the South African singer took to the stage as the sun was going down and the city lights were coming up and shining into the intimate venue and brought a bit of magic.

Check Out Our Live Pix Of Africa Now! at the Apollo Theater Featuring Tuelo

The world's best singer is getting ready to release her new single, "St. Margaret," a tribute to her mother who she says has never heard her talented daughter sing. As the New Yorkers filled the room and were spoiled to hear the sounds of someone who has captured audiences around the city and beyond, Tuelo showcased not just her raw and pure talent but energy as well.

Listen to Our South African Mixtape on Spotify!

"We are going to start off slow, then pick things up," she declared after performing her songs "Raul," "On Air," and a stripped down version of ABBA's "Fernando." She told stories of her childhood, her family, and growing up in Apartheid-era South Africa and how it all brought her to this moment in front of a New York audience. As she spoke, the venue suddenly felt less like a bar but more like someones living room. She and the band have the ability to make it that intimate and personal.

The band's sound is a mix of rock and soul meets jazz and punk. It is a hybrid of everything that has made up the sound of New York City and comes from someone who is a transplant to the Big Apple, which in many ways, makes it so much more special. Tuelo makes us realize what life is about, what this city is about, and most of all, what the music is about -- a universal love and appeal.

Read Our 2016 Interview with Tuelo

As the humble singer continued her set which included the songs "Dreamer," "Doors," and a funky cover of Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," she had everyone on their feet, dancing, singing, clapping and making us realize it may be Tuesday but let's party like the weekend.

Her residency at Rockwood continues next month, we are telling you to mark your calender's now and rush to see her.

Quick News

In the new Q magazine, Damon Albarn opened up about how Morrissey, Sade, Dione Warwick turned down the opportunity to be apart of the new Gorillaz album, Humanz, which arrives later this month. He said: "I don’t take rejection personally." He also said that a 10-episode TV series based on the animated band, which debuted in 2002, is finally arriving. No word as to when it will air or who has picked it up.

Albarn also revealed to Q that he is working on the sophomore follow-up to his other, other, other, band The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, who released their self-titled debut a decade ago. The band, which features The Clash’s Paul Simonon, The Verve’s Simon Tong, and former Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, said he was inspired be Brexit to rev things up. "Brexit has obviously given us a wonderful starting point," he said.

Former Oasis guitarist, Alan "Bonehead" McGee told The Sun that he does not want to see Oasis reunite. “I just hope they don’t spoil the legend, try and recreate and get back together,” McGee told The Sun. “They’d fuck it up.
